Understanding your weekly digest

By Andy Gaber · Published August 23, 2026 · Last updated August 23, 2026

The TariffWatch weekly digest is the email the $29/mo Watchlist sends every Monday at 09:00 UTC. It covers Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) documents published in the Federal Register in the previous seven days and shows which of them touched the HTS codes on your watchlist. It is a weekly digest, not a same-day alert. This guide walks each part of the email and how to triage it in five minutes.

What it scans, and what it does not

One source: BIS documents in the Federal Register, pulled from the federalregister.gov public API. USTR Section 301 notices, USITC Chapter 99 revisions, CBP CSMS messages and MFN rate changes are not scanned.

Digest header

The first block lists your HTS codes, the number of new BIS notices published in the last seven days, how many of them had a title matching your codes, and how many carried an open comment window. If your watchlist has no codes, no digest is sent; reply to any TariffWatch email or add codes to start it.

Matches by HTS code

For each of your codes that matched, the digest lists the notices with a link to the Federal Register document, the document type, the FR document number and the publication date. A notice matches when its title mentions your full code, its 6-digit subheading or its 4-digit heading. Because matching is on the title, a notice that lists codes only in its body text can be missed, so treat the digest as a triage aid, not a legal determination. For the current Section 232 coverage itself, the Federal Register notices and the Section 232 regulations at 15 CFR Part 705 remain the primary sources.

Action needed: open comment windows

If a matched notice has a comment deadline, it is marked "Comments close" with the date and summarized in an "Action needed" box. Comments are filed on the regulations.gov docket named in the notice. Comment periods are set notice by notice; they are not guaranteed and can be short. There is no separate reminder email before a comment period closes.

Quiet weeks

If nothing matched, the digest still sends and says so, with the count of BIS notices it checked. That lets you tell "nothing happened" from "the monitor died."

What to do after reading the digest

For matched notices, open the Federal Register link and read the notice itself. Run the numbers through the Section 232 exposure calculator to see the dollar impact on a typical shipment, and talk to your customs broker or trade counsel before acting on a match. If a notice invites comment, the comment letter template article walks the structure.

FAQ

Can I change delivery to daily instead of weekly? No. The paid digest runs once a week, Monday 09:00 UTC, covering the prior seven days. There is no daily or same-day option today.

What time zone is the digest in? UTC. It is sent Monday at 09:00 UTC for everyone, not in your local time zone.

Can the digest go to Slack? Yes, if you connect Slack from your account's integrations page, the same weekly digest posts there. Email to a distribution list also works.
